Class Descriptions and Instructor Information: Botanical Whimsy Wall Hanging by Julie Haymaker Thompson In this fun and easy class, we will create a whimsical floral assemblage, based on the photorealism still lifes of bygone eras. Each student will be provided with a custom made frame along with a vintage ceiling tile to work with as your background setting. Vintage book pages, flowers made from hand dyed felts, vintage linens, laces and old buttons will be included for you to sew together as well as hand sewn unique leaves. Add laces and velvet ribbon as decorative touches to the frame and your own still life will emerge. Techniques and instructions for creating paper clay elements and any pre-made embellishments will all be a part of your kit and class. Design, texture and color arrangement are only part of the fun. Julie Haymaker Thompson’s professional art background is in Illustration. She has over 30 years experience in that field as a freelance artist and in house artist for Hallmark Cards. When not illustrating, Julie has always been drawn to the arts and crafts field and has shown her work in galleries. She also has professional training in fine metal smithing and loves the process of adding detail to her work. Julie loves to take classes to learn new things and to teach. She enjoys watching her students move out of the stresses of daily living to spending several hours caught up in the relaxing moment of creating and learn more about herself as everyone's creative approach is unique. Julie’s approach to her work has always been whimsical in design with the element of sophistication in finishing techniques. Dragonfly Ballerina Queen Shadowbox by Lisa Kettell Take a journey to the world of Faerie Enchantment as you learn the exciting technique of doll making. Students will transform their dolls into a magical dragonfly using Lisa’s exclusive line of china doll head molds. Basic doll construction, painting, clothing, shadowbox assemblage using a plethora of vintage pieces are just some of the techniques you will learn. Crowns, beaded flowers, rosettes, lace sewing, ribbons and bows as well as some basic jewelry techniques will transform your assemblage into a vintage showpiece. Ever since Lisa could hold a crayon, she has been creating a world of fantasy. Her various artistic mediums have been fueled by her love of history, her world travels, and her inimitable imagination. She shares her creativity in The Faerie Zine, a zine she founded in 2006, that is dedicated to the unlimited possibilities in the world of art and to building friendships within the artist community. In her current publication, Altered Art Circus, she shares her unpredictable, imaginary world with you as well. Her artwork has been published in newspapers, magazines, books, and on websites. She enjoys teaching workshops and is currently in the process of licensing a new line of products. Her imaginary world is based in New Jersey. Learn how to adorn yourself with these whimsical fabric creations. Make a statement! Unite hand sewing with vintage, fabric, laces, buttons, beads, vintage brass charms, repurposed jewelry or even old keys, to create something original and enchanting! Ruth Rae is a classically trained jeweler. During Ruth’s tenure as a metal smith, she began to experiment with other forms of media and techniques. As time progressed Ruth’s true passion has become “mixed media fiber art.” Ruth’s pieces are recognized for their unexpected yet elegant combinations of altered fabrics combined with found objects and words that are bound together by hand and machine stitching. Ruth’s work has been featured in galleries across the country, countless art publications as well as Quilting Arts TV and has two workshop DVD’s. Ruth co-authored a unique jewelry book, “A Charming Exchange” And her next book “Layered, Tattered and Stitched: A Fabric Art Workshop” will be released at the end of 2009.
